An Incredibly Close Shave!

For any woman thinking about shaving their head - DO IT. I'm hoping that writing about my own experience, and a few other ideas, will help open the minds of others and maybe even help someone decide whether they should shave their head! So let's think thoughts about head shaving...!

My Personal Experience

Younger Me With Short Hair

Why did the idea of shaving my head come into my unshaven head? To be completely honest, I have no clue why I started thinking about it. However, once I realised that this was a completely viable option, I just knew that it was something I was going to go through with eventually, even with the doubts and uncertainty of it... I've done lots of things with my hair before, and, when I was younger, it's even been cut VERY short, however, I have never just grabbed some clippers and started shaving all my hair off... (a thought that scared me a little but also excited me).

After exploring the idea in my head, one day I decided to book a hair appointment for after work on Christmas Eve Eve 2021. Throughout the day I plagued my colleagues with questions about whether they thought I should do it or not (sorry!!)... Most thought it was a pretty "out-there" thing to do, but, although they said they could never see themselves doing it, they definitely supported me, as they could see it was something I wanted to do. I even took a plastic doll and cut her hair off to see if it suited her... it did!

Cutting a doll's hair off was a tad bit random at that moment in time, but then, when the children at nursery started playing with the doll, it got me thinking. I asked some of the older children whether they thought I should shave all my hair off like the doll, and I received two different responses. Some enthusiastically said "YESSSSS!!", others said "NOOOO!!" and also stated that "short hair is for boys". That's when I realised that shaving my head would also be an example to young girls. Not necessarily to encourage them to dramatically shave all their hair off, but to show them that having short hair, looking different, stepping outside of society's beauty ideals, doesn't remove your femininity or natural beauty. Your hair ISN'T everything... IT. GROWS. BACK.

About the Length of My Hair Before Shaving

I went onto my hair appointment and still felt like I couldn't commit to shaving my head, so I decided to just get a short haircut... When I walked out of the salon, I absolutely HATED what the hairdresser had done, so, I decided that I was just going to get rid of it all and start fresh!

The Haircut That Just Wasn't What I Asked For...

Once I got home, I called my mum, spoke to my boyfriend, and asked other family members their opinions. (At this point in time, most of my family were in Wales, ready for our Christmas holiday, so I was on my own with a pair of clippers). Mostly everyone I asked had the opinion that I should NOT shave my head, especially without the help of a hairdresser, however, I had a gut feeling, deep in my heart, I wanted to do it...

I did it!

And so I did it! I decided to just follow my instincts and put aside the opinions that were against me shaving my head, because, in the end, they are only opinions, and you can either take them or leave them. I'm so glad I listened to myself because, in this situation, I knew what I wanted, and it made me feel so free when I took that chance to do something bold (or bald if you want to make it a pun........ Cheesy)! While shaving my head, as my hair fell to the ground, I began to feel lighter, knowing that this was the consequence of my own choice.

As well as the liberating experience, shaving my head brought on several more positives:

  1. Maintaining a shaved head is pretty simple... get out of bed andddddddd... that's it!

  2. Costs are almost £0.00, as long as you're confident enough to grab the clippers and a "how-to" YouTube video, you'll be good to go!

  3. Healthy hair can be produced by just starting with a fresh head of hair (all of my dead, bleached and dyed hair fell to the floor within seconds)!

  4. Confidence came, for me, through not having my hair to hide behind!

  5. Feeling amazing meant that I felt light and free, but I also physically felt brilliant because of the fuzzy texture... I couldn't stop touching my shaved head!

So, in summary, shaving my head was freeing and felt amazing. There is pretty much zero maintenance, zero cost and it made my hair feel healthier and made me feel more confident... So, as I said at the beginning of this post, if you are thinking about it, I strongly recommend shaving your head!

So that was the story of my experience with an incredibly close shave! I hope you enjoyed reading this post and that it sparked some thoughts. Please feel free to get in touch and I'll see you at my next post!
